During the 1920’s China invented the game Mahjong which became very popular in the West. In the today’s world mahjong games are on the internet and they are easily accessible. So now let’s learn to play Mahjong
Let’s Get stated!
The most important thing in the beginning of the game is that a dealer must be decided before the game begins. The player who has the highest throw after throwing he dice will be determined as the dealer. East is the dealers Wind, the South Wind is at the dealers right, The west wind is next to the players at the south wind and right after that is the North Wind. The winds will keep changing unless the dealer wins the round.
All the tiles are shuffled and are placed facing downwards. Building the wall is known when the player stacks the tiles in front of them in which two are high and one is deep.
The dealer adds the total once the dice is thrown. The dealer then uses the number and starts counting clockwise since the dealer is number 1.This go on until a player’s row is picked. Some tiles are moved and counted to the right from the right edge of the wall. This is done at the beginning. Four tiles are taken from the players on the right of the dealer from his left and four from the right are taken by the other players.
Lets Play Mahjong
In each round, a player has to withdraw one tile from the wall and the player must add it to their hand and discard the tile onto the table. If the player withdraws a flower tile, it has to be replaced immediately either from the dead wall or if not available in the dead wall then the back wall..
Let’s get familiar with the terms Melds, Pongs, Kongs and Chows
In order for the player to complete a meld he can call or even bid for tile which is pushed away by another player. While doing this, the type of the meld that they are forming must be stated by the player and it should face upwards on the table. Only three different types of melds can be formed.
- A set of three identical tiles as known as Pongs
- A set of four tiles is known as Kong. A Kong that is made out of four tiles is called as Concealed Kong. Kong that is made out of thrown away tile is known as exposed kong. A kong that is declared cannot be parted.
- Tile that are suited in an order I called a Chow. A chow can only be declared as an exposed chow when the player from the left discards the tile.
It is time to end the game
A hand that is ready to make a winning combination that is on one tile is called as a ready hand
in the game of mahjong there are no winners. This happens when the dead wall is remaining and the game ends in a draw
Who’s the winner?
A player who has made a standard mahjong hand wins the round. This can also be termed as creating a mahjong. A group of melds creates a Mahjong. This keeps changing with the number if tiles that the player is playing with.4 melds are required in a 13-tile game and 5 meld in a 16-tile game.
